The cells of your body become addicted to everything from heroin to stress, your brain creates peptides that tell your cells how to feel, drugs affect the cells in the same way. it takes time to get addicted and time to break free. its the same thing with personality disorders. withdrawals are a combination of your cells wanting more and your brain wanting more. theres alot more but that's basically it.
