Methadone: Methadone Symptoms & Side Effects

Question: I would like to know what might happen to a person if they try to quit 50mg methadone cold turkey?

Hey i'm 24 and a very concerned daughter. My mother started with the 175mg methadone for severe pain in her back 2 years ago. A year ago they dropped her down to the 50mg methadone and she has been taking this everyday for the past year. Now she is trying to quit cold turkey on her own and so far is not going to good. She's complaining of severe diarrhea, body pains, hot and cold flashes, and that her mind just isn't right. She has no insurance or medical help financially. Which is why she is choosing to do it this way and I am very worried about her. Any comments and answers would be helpful on this thank you.

Methadone is a synthetic heroin so your mother is going through detox right now. Detoxifying your body of the thing it is addicted to can be a very painful and drawn out process with all the symptoms you described and more. If you are worried call the hospital and talk to a doctor or nurse about her symptoms. They can give you a better idea of what to expect.

If she's been taking them for two years going cold turkey is going to be a rough ride for at least 2 weeks. stock up on popsicles they will keep her hydrated without making her throw if back up.when she can eat go with fresh fruit. tell her good luck because it's not a joy ride.
