I have rods and screws in my spine after 3 spinal surgeries. After 10 years on pain management, I realized I was totally dependent on opiates not just for pain. I discussed this with my doctor and wanted no more opiates and was going through severe withdrawals, not to mention still in terrible spinal pain. We discussed the use of methadone and we agreed I would try it. It helped me rid of that awful withdrawal and helped the pain, not as much as the pain pills but I also agreed to spinal injections to aid the methadone......fantastic job it does. Anyhow, I started the methadone at age 38 and now am 45 and I have not had a period since I was 38 and many many tests to see if I was going through menopause were all negative up until and including a week ago. I also received a regime of hormones to bring on my period, no avail So the only thing that has been different is the methadone usage. All the doctors say they " don't think so' what kind of answer is that? What do you all think?

Being addicted to Methadone is pretty bad too I would think...I don't know just curious...Good answers so far...I was doing some reading just now from some blogs of ex heroin addicts on methadone. The majority of them said that they have been able to quit heroin cold turkey at one point, however no of them can quit methadone even once. Very interesting stuff...one horribly addicting drug for another...

Why is methadone used for addiction treatment when it happens to be an opiate just like heroin?
Wouldn't people get addicted to methadone too? I know people started out believing that heroin is some kind of treatment for morphine addiction. What if methadone is the same way? I'm just really curious.

I've heard of methadone being used to treat a lot of addictions from heroin to benzos to painkillers and even pot lol? . My father had been perscribed methadone for the past 15 yrs. He died two weeks ago his autopsy showed a high dose of methadone and cirrosis. Is it normal for methadone to be perscribed is high doses for such a long period of time he was using it to rehabilite from drug use

Methadone use question ?
My sister has been acting very strange for about 2 years now, since she got together with her current boyfriend who the WHOLE family HATES . She's tired all the time, falls asleep talking to you even standing up I know they boyfriend used to do heroin because we found old newspaper articles about him being arrested for possession ... at least 3 times that we know of. The most recent was May 2006. And he went to jail for 8 months for that one.Today, my sister's son asked me what methadone is. He said mom and her boyfriend take it. Long story short ... She's not and never has been in any kind of drug program. He's not either, as far as we know. So where do they get it from? Is this something you can buy " on the street" ?Also, if he is in a drug program, that we don't know about, how does he get it to her? My sister in law is a nurse who used to work with addicts and she says if he's in a program they make you take it right there, in front of them ... it's not like they give it you and you can take it home. I can't confront her about this until I know more about it so any help would be great.Thanks By the way, my sister is 35 and does not have any kind of chronic pain.
