Question: Pregnant underage methadone subutex?
(Posted by: on 2010-05-14 22:06:57)
I am sixteen, pregnant, and in the hospital cause i cant detox due to being pregnant. They started me out on methadone 50 mg had me on that dose and sent me home and to a methadone maitenance clinic, who couldnt give me methadone cause I was underage. SOOO, they re admitted me to the hospital and swiched me to subutex AND I HATE IT headaches, drowsiness, nausea, AND I FEEL LIKE SHITTT!!! so I wanted the doctor to switch me back to methadone and wene me off of it in the hospital so I can go home drug free BUT THE DUMB ASS DOCTOR wont put me back on methadone and let me taper he only wants me to taper off of subutex. So i started refusing the subutex and I hope that since he sees im refusing to take it he will have no choice but to put me back on methadone and wene me off. Can he get in trouble for not giving me methadone? Is there any other doctor that specializes in ob/ gyn pregnant drug addicts in the huntington WV area??? |

Hon, the doctor CANNOT prescribe methadone to you for addiction--it is illegal. You can only get methadone for addiction treatment from a clinic--and as you said, they sometimes will not accept underage patients. However, methadone treatment is the number one most recommended treatment for opioid addicted pregnant women--it does NOT cause any damage to the baby. Some babies will be born dependent on methadone (about 65%) and will need a short period on the hospital to be tapered off the medication, but that's it. I would suggest strongly that you contact your state methadone authority and tell them of your problem--they may be able to get you an exemption so you can get into the clinic. Clinics usually make pregnant women a priority and take them first over other people waiting. Here is the state methadone authority for your state: Merritt Moore Division of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse 350 Capitol Street, Room 350 Charleston, WV 25177 Telephone: (304) 558-3847 Fax: (304) 558-3275 Merritt.E.Moore@wv.gov Good Luck! Also you may want to come to this website: atwatchdog.lefora.com This is a website for methadone patients to ask questions and get answers from other patients. |

If that is what he recommends, and with you under age all he has to do is get your folks OK, you have to take it. If you refuse, they can strap you down. It's not right but, they can and will. I don't know the laws in WV, but your folks can have the baby taken away once born if you are still have problems detoxing. Here, the state will do it without asking. Try to work with them. I know it's hard. But it is the best thing for you and your baby. You can check around, though. Sorry. I hope you get the help and support your need. |
