Since methadone programs are highly regulated in the US, I think methadone programs here are quite successful. The supply of substance itself is tightly controlled, and methadone clinics only allow addicts into the program after other methods of rehab have failed, so it's not like methadone is rampantly abused or over prescribed. However, i don't think indefinite use of methadone is a good thing, since you just become dependent on a different drug (albeit, one that doesn't make you high). So the next step in the evolution of methadone programs is to make it easier for patients to quit methadone, and be free of all addictions. In russia, apparently, methadone programs are illegal. |
