Can't they do it by sheer will power and going cold turkey?

A lot of people think that they can just get off of drugs when they take it because they have strong will power. This is not the case. Will power won't cut it. This is due to the fact that the body and brain gets accustomed to the presence of the drug. The drug alters brain functioning and the brain gets convinced that the drug is needed by the body. Once the body is deprived of the drug, the body will send signals to the brain that it needs the drug to function. This manifests in the form of withdrawal symptoms. Thus, the individual is forced to continue on with his drug intake. This is why drug addiction treatments are needed. Therapy, counseling, and medication will help individuals conquer their addiction and gradually pave the way to sobriety.
