Addiction is similar to obsesive compulsive disorder. For example someone with OCD will wash their hands repeatedly until they blead. Or even more common, chew their nails until it hurts. There is an obvious negative consiquence, but people do the behaviour anyway, despite feelling pain, looking unattractive, social stigma, etc. Drug addicts feel a similar compulsion, only their behaviours are more dangerous (since they can lead to arrest, overdose, financial ruind, divorse, etc). The obsession is so strong and pervasive that the though to use drugs is constant. It never eases up until it is satisfied. Often addicts will try to obstain for days, weeks, even months, but eventually just give in to quite that repetitive feeling, that insestuis need to use. Often times they do not want to relapse into full addiction, but to use just one more time. The cumolsion seems like it will ease after that, but instead it is renewed and the desire to use is as strong as ever. Without treatment that desire may never go away (even after years of forced abstences, such as jail). It eventually becomes so tiersome to fight with oneself that the consequences become less improtatn then just a moment of peace. |
