I was wondering which is more of a threat. Suicide/ Self Harm or Drug Abuse? I personally think cutting is more used as some consider it a Drug AND you don't have to sneak around to get a knive, though I suppose hiding the cuts might be harder than hiding Drug Abuse, for with drug abuse there arn't as many defined effects left afterwards. I'm torn really. So what do you think?

Suicide and self-harm should not be grouped together as they are totally different. You are right when you compare self harm to drug abuse as it can be an addiction. In most cases, the cutter doesn't want to die, just relieve the internal pain they are feeling but it becomes addictive. I say most cases, b/ c WHERE they cut is important (face, chest and genitals can indicate a deeper problem, such as schizophrenia). So, IMHO, I feel that drug abuse is more common AND more of a threat because of the lethality of the drugs that are being abused.

Believe it or not, cutting is an addiction just like any drug would be. They are both very dangerous ways of coping with hard emotions, both deadly, and both will make you even more depressed in the long run, causing more problems than they are solving. Both will break a loved one's heart, and both are very risky. Theres the risk of overdosing, and theres the risk of cutting into a vein. Both of them, if they get serious, will get you locked up, either in prison or a psych ward. They are equally destructive and equally terrible.

As a threat, suicide would be first, drug abuse (hard drugs) second, cutting, then soft drugs (pot, tobacco, alcohol). All are used to escape or mask pain - to cope. All are more common among trouble persons of any age. Cutting, though, seems a younger people's coping method.

I think drug abuse. Although I've been involved with both. Maybe self harm is more hidden.
