For four possibly five years now i have been drinking a 24 ounce can of malt liquore (steel reserve) everynight when i get home. i want to stop drinking becasue i feel like it is a bad habit, and plus i want to quite smoking because whenever i drink i smoke. so i figure i need to stop them both. i know that i have a mental addiction, do you think i will have physical alcohol withdrawal? if so how long do you think it will last? |

You may not go through full blown withdrawl because of the amount of liquor you consume daily. if you start feeling symptoms of withdrawl more than 3 days after your last drink, go to the hospital immediately. AA support groups help too and you can always reach them at aa.org or you can go to aa.org/ lang/ en/ meeting_finder.cfm?origpage= 29 for support. |

Four or five years is a long time, however....You shouldn't have big with drawls. If anything maybe you might feel a little anxiety. Because you are drinking this at night it may help you sleep better at night. When you stop it you will have to learn to go to sleep without it and this may be the only thing you might see different. It shouldn't take long before you feel normal. Once you stop you should see that you actually sleep better and will feel better in the morning. Good Luck! |

Just reduce your alcohol intake by 1 unit every week, and your smoking by 1 ciggarette each week, it is easy to do, but it does take a few months before you are of them both completely. also if you have a coulple of beers and a ciggarette when you go out somewhere it is ok. |

It may depend on the person. I was a heavy smoker and drinker. I quit smoking 32 years ago and quit drinking 29 years ago. It was rough to stop smoking, but I had no withdrawal effects after I quit drinking. |
