Honestly dear..and I say this with the up most respect for you (myself having lived with an alcoholic for 15 years..who died in 2000)... YOU cannot do anything for this person nor can you advise him...unless you are a licensed mental health professional or physician, the ONLY thing you can do is advise him to seek treatment and stand by him if you want to . That's it. HE has to WANT to get help....and there is nothing you can do to "fix " him...suggest that he seek help, but if he doesn't, it's not your "job " to fix, cover up or make excuses for him. Sometimes, binge drinkers and alcoholics have to "fall on their face " (literally AND figuratively) a few times before they will seek help. I would make some suggestions to him, tell him you refuse to cover up for him from now on (hard as that is to do...you're going to HAVE to!)...and let him make his OWN mistakes. The only thing YOU need to do is protect YOURSELF. And PS- Most alcoholics ARE NOT 24 hour a day dependent on drinking...my late husband could go days without a drink...if someone is using alcohol to cover up emotions, or to "run away " from their feelings, and experience black-outs, changes in personality, drinks alone and can't plan a social (or even personal) event without alcohol playing an "important " role, then that person has a PROBLEM.... |

There are several medications on the market that can help your friend. It's a tough thing though, because many of them have side effects, or don't work properly for some people. Your friend needs to see a Rehab Specialist, or a doctor to help them find the right medication for them. These meds when used properly can have an amazing effect! It should also be noted that many addicts are prescribed antidepressants, or mood stabilizers (such as SSRI's) after they are sober to help regulate their moods & keep them calm. There are several reasons for this, if you e-mail me, I'll be glad to send you some links that might help you find out more info! Good luck & remember, there is always hope for an addict! |
