A properly managed alcohol detoxification by a team of competent practitioners should allow individuals who are alcohol dependent to withdraw from alcohol in safe and comfortable manner. In my experience, the easy part is the detox - the hard part is staying abstinent long term. If you are not serious about reducing you alcohol intake or ceasing drinking altogether following detoxification, then I would question your suitability to under go this procedure. Repeated periods of abstinence, followed by a return to drink increases the likely hood of the delirium tremens during the next detoxification due to a phenomena known as the "kindling effect ". I would of course hope that you are being prescribed thiamine to prevent nerve damage associated with long term alcohol consumption. Good luck. |
