Question: I have a serious addiction...?

To biting my nails. I think I started when I was around 7, and now I'm 15. The problem is I'm aware of biting my nails, but I can't seem to stop. My parents think it's related to stress & I should go see a doctor or something. I think it's just a bad habit. So is it actually just a bad habit or a sign that I'm stressed, nervous etc. ? |

You should see a doctor for it. You can get nail polish that is specifically for nail biters that tastes very badly when you try to bite your nails. |

Bad habit. You don't polish your nails do you? Cause that taste would remind me to not do it. |

They make nail polish that tastes REALLY AWFUL to help stop you from biting your nails. You should try channeling your nervous behavior into something else. If you feel like biting your nails, try doing 10 jumping jacks or chewing on a straw or something. |

I bite my nails when i'm nervous, and like you, i don't realize it sometimes. it's not an addiction, just a bad habit, and like the answers above me, they do make this nasty tasting polish for your nails, don't worry, you can't even tell its on their, it's not shiny or anything. try chewing gum when you get stressed or nervous, also carry a stress ball or tennis ball you can squeeze |

Hello, I,too, have been a nail biter my whole life. I am currently 28. I've gotten a bit better but when I'm stressed I resort back to my old ways. When I was 13 my dad took me to get acrylic nails hoping that I would stop. It didn't help. I just ended up biting them off. Gross I know. I've tried the Sally Hansen polish that tastes really bad if you attempt to bite your nails. To be honest I don't know how to completely break the habit or what to suggest to you. It's really tough to break because your nails are always with you. I believe it's a habit triggered by stress/ anxiety/ nervousness. At least it is for me. I think I'm going to ask my doctor the next time I go. Just don't feel too badly about it. It's very hard to stop completely. Although I've gotten better at not biting them as much but I still have tendencies for relapse. Good Luck!! |
