Question: In what ways has addiction been proven medically, to be a disease?

With all this talk recently about 'sexual addiction' I was wondering in what ways addiction constitutes being a disease? I know that drug addiction is a serious chemical dependency and the withdrawal from long- term use is pretty awful. I can wrap my head around that much, although I think the term "disease " may strip the user of responsibility in the end, which I don't agree with. But in what ways do things like sex addiction, gambling addiction, the sort of compulsions that are not triggered by chemical usage constitute the classification of "disease ". I am confused by this aspect of addiction. I read that "sexual addiction " has not been recognized by the American psychological community, or any other global medical groups for that matter.
