I am losing weight after 25 years of being podgey and am liking the results, but I can't stop taking pics of myself in provocative poses on my camera phone or staring at myself in car reflections on days out. It's becoming an addiction. Help? |

There's nothing wrong with that. I take pics of myself a lot and i weigh almost the same all my life. I just want to see myself how i look like and if i need something to touch up on. Congratulations anyway for being fit. Have a nice day. |

Consider putting your phone down for 24 solid hours, and staying clear of mirrors, or other reflective things. It sounds like your mind is just on overload, and maybe you need a break from the stimulation. Find something else to do that will stimulate your brain. Try reading. Books are free from the library, if you can't afford to buy one right now. Another thought is that perhaps you're insecure and you're trying to reassure yourself that you do look good. Even people who promote themselves as conceited, or self-assured can actually be insecure. If you're looking at yourself for reassurance, or an extra boost of self-esteem, then you may have more issues to tackle, but that's not unusual. The best way to stop self-absorbtion in it's tracks though is to begin to notice those around you with problems that you can do something about. Consider volunteering at a homeless shelter, a food bank, a children's crisis nursery, habitat for humanity, a library where you can teach children to read, or a nursing home where people are often lonely and in need of companionship. Do something for somebody else, and you'll begin to find that you no longer have time to be obsessed with yourself. It really helps. :-) |

Stay away from MySpace for a few weeks - the constant inundation of provocative camera phone poses is warping your sense of good photography. |

I've heard if a person can't avoid looking in the mirror, or at their reflection, it can be a sign of mental illness. And actually I have a friend who is 'off' a bit who has this problem, so I guess there's something to that. BUT,, it sounds to me like you are simply enjoying the results of all your hard work. I don't think there's anything wrong with that! If you have lived overweight for several years and this is your first time looking a way you'd like to look I'd imagine that can be pretty cool and pretty overwhelming all at the same time! If you really think it's becoming something 'weird' then certainly go talk with a professional therapist. Are you spending so much time a day on self indulgence that you have no time for anything else? If so, then you probably should get assistance in getting yourself back on track to a more normal lifestyle. But if you're just admiring yourself in every reflection and taking pics now and again, who cares? You SHOULD be reveling in your new healthier body! So, it's just hard for anyone here to judge and it's not up to us to JUDGE..only you know if these activities are impeding your life or not, if so, find a good therapist you can talk with, if not, don't worry over it! All my best. |
